Legislators honor Gaines’ activism

House Majority Whip Johnny Garrett, R-Goodlettsville, and the Tennessee General Assembly recently honored Sumner County native and former University of Kentucky swimmer Riley Gaines at the State Capitol in Nashville.

Garrett presented House Joint Resolution 33 to the House of Representatives, commending her work to protect women and girls’ sports across the nation.

“Riley Gaines boldly defended female athletes’ rights and spoke out against men competing in women’s divisions,” Garrett said. “Women deserve a level playing field and Riley is a powerful voice in that fight. I’m proud to call her one of Sumner County’s own and stand with her in protecting the future of women’s sports.”
